Biography
1960-88
Innocent, not so innocent , naïve sixteen went off to oil & turpentine
heaven at Kingston school of only slightly risky Art…. to learn to find and
know myself ….learning to look and feel and think and express through
constant drawing for four glorious years. Another year to teach in briney
bed-sit Brighton taught me to make a lovely book , to print images through
gauze on cloth, the craftful shellac & wax way. Moving married & hopeful to
Dartful Devon, followed terry-towelled , burco nappied years while any
painting chance was buried by fourfold child-encrusted years of laps and
cuddles. As off to school they went, with a
single-parented need to keep
my little flock, my trusty sewing machine,
shears & yards of cloth and ideas for artful, stripey smocks emerged ….my
Schmocks. Creativity took on a new format, kitchen-tabled screen-prints
emerged of butterfly, dragonfly & dragon, AK Originals. Proper workshops
followed & Schmocks flourished . As children left home I dreamed of painting
again.
1988- I moved to friendly Wales, ever closer to the sea. Flowery cards
helped me on my painting way, to first shared exhibition at Taliesin in 1992
of rivers , and local legends. Joining the Welsh Watercolour Society my
watery work continues, Pembrokeshire-coasted. Welsh Arts Council assisted
exhibitions ‘Above & Below’, and ‘The Power of Water & Swell of the Wave’
both toured Wales. Wave-crashed, Surf-bashed, Ring-pooled, On the Rocks ,
Pool-edged, Rock-crashed, Lagoon-rippled years later, here I am at 70,
taking on heron-priested shores and Bible-black nights, Rabbit & Lovers Wood
with a long look through my years.
NEWS
My Cloth Card & Canvas exhibition at the Ceri
Richards gallery, Swansea University, was received very well and was full of
information & photos from my earlier years. It was my ‘Retrospective at 70’
and covered my whole creative years from my earliest paintings aged 14 &
15, through Art School years, through my screen printing & Schmocks &
children years . It included mounted sketches, flower studies and
screen-prints plus a selection of paintings from all my exhibitions. It also
included those of Dylan Thomas’ work which were painted specially for the
exhibition: these included ‘Heron-priested shores’, ‘Starless & Bible-black’
and ‘…through the green fuse’. These works will be
shown at an exhibition in Barry in September (see ‘exhibitions’).
NEWS There have been many exhibitions, the latest
being Cloth Card & Canvas at Swansea Uni, and before that at MOMA Wales,
Machynlleth. I have now put my work in the Goat Street Gallery, St Davids as
well as having a few in the Golden Sheaf in Narberth and sometimes at the
White Lion Street gallery, Tenby. Other than those galleries, I have a small
studio-gallery at home in New Moat, and also exhibit with the Royal
Watercolour Society of Wales. I shall be trying to build a new body of work
for exhibiting at the Tenby Museum & gallery on 22nd
August 2015...this will be a small retrospective show plus new work.
